This Privacy Policy describes how UnderTree ("we," "us," "our") handles information when you use the UnderTree mobile app (the "App").

1) Summary

No account required: You can use the App without registration. A randomly generated device identifier is used to associate your data.
No ads: The App does not display any advertising.
No payments (current version): The current version is free and does not process payments.
No third-party analytics SDKs: We do not integrate third-party analytics or advertising SDKs.
AI-powered features: Some content is processed by third-party AI services to provide intelligent conversation and content generation.

2) Information We Collect

2A. Information you provide

You may choose to provide information when using the App:

Journal entries: Text content, mood scores, and tags you create for emotional reflection and life recording.
Chat messages: Text you send to the AI companion for conversation and emotional support.
Photos: Images you upload from your camera or photo library to attach to journal entries.
Onboarding responses: Usage intent, mood rating, and preferences you provide during initial setup.
Virtual pet info: Pet name and type you select for the virtual pet companionship feature.
Feedback: If you submit feedback, we receive the title, content, and any contact information you provide.

2B. Information collected automatically

When you use the App, our servers may receive or generate:

Device identifier: A randomly generated UUID stored locally on your device (not based on hardware identifiers).
Device/app basics: Device brand, model, OS version, app version, language/region settings.
Network information: IP address and connection details needed to deliver content.
Request logs: Timestamps and standard server log data used for reliability and security.

We do not collect precise GPS location, contacts, SMS messages, call history, or health data.

2C. AI content processing

If you use the chat or journaling features:

Your chat messages and journal content may be sent to third-party AI services (DeepSeek, via Volcano Engine) to generate conversation replies, journal titles, and emotion analysis.
Pet travel illustrations are generated by an AI image service (Doubao/ByteDance) using system-generated prompts only — no personal user content is sent for image generation.

      Important: We recommend that you avoid entering highly sensitive personal information (such as government ID numbers, financial account details, or passwords) in conversations or journal entries, as this content is processed by third-party AI services.
    

2D. On-device data

The App stores certain data locally on your device, such as:

App preferences (language, theme settings).
Authentication tokens stored in encrypted device-level secure storage.

3) How We Use Information

We use the information above to:

Provide core App features: journaling, mood tracking, AI conversation, virtual pet companionship, and Soul Tree growth.
Generate personalized content: mood calendars, emotion trends, and keyword statistics.
Generate AI-powered content: conversation replies, journal titles, emotion analysis tags, and pet travel stories with illustrations.
Maintain and improve stability, reliability, and security.
Respond to support requests and user feedback.
Comply with legal obligations where applicable.

4) How We Share Information

We do not sell your personal information.

We may share limited information only in these cases:

4A. Service providers

We use infrastructure and AI service providers to operate the App. Specifically:

DeepSeek (via Volcano Engine): AI text processing for chat and journal features.
Doubao / ByteDance (via Volcano Engine): AI image generation for pet travel illustrations.
Cloud storage provider: Image file hosting.

These providers process information only to provide services to us and under obligations consistent with this Privacy Policy.

4B. Legal and safety

We may disclose information if reasonably necessary to comply with law or to protect the rights, safety, and security of users and our services.

4C. Business transfers

If we are involved in a merger, acquisition, or asset sale, information may be transferred as part of that transaction, subject to applicable law.

5) Data Retention

Journal entries and records: Retained until you delete them. Deleted records are soft-deleted and permanently removed after 30 days.
On-device data: Remains on your device unless you remove the App.
Server logs: Retained for a limited period as necessary for security and debugging, then deleted or anonymized.
Feedback: Retained as long as needed to respond and for reasonable record-keeping.

6) Your Choices

You can:

Delete records: Remove any journal entries or mood data within the App.
Request complete erasure: Contact us to delete all your data from our servers.
Uninstall the App: Remove locally stored data from your device.

7) Security

We use reasonable safeguards to protect your information, including HTTPS encryption for data in transit, JWT-based authentication, encrypted on-device storage for sensitive credentials, and database access controls. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure.

8) Device Permissions

Camera (optional): Take photos to attach to journal entries.
Photo Library (optional): Select images from your gallery.
Internet Access (required): Data sync, AI conversation, and content loading.

We do not request access to your location, contacts, microphone, Bluetooth, or other sensitive permissions.

9) Children's Privacy

The App is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child provided personal information, contact us and we will take appropriate steps.

10) International Users

If you use the App from outside the United States, your information may be processed in the United States or other locations where our servers or service providers operate. We take steps designed to protect information in line with this Privacy Policy.

11) Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will post the updated version where the policy is made available and update the "Last Updated" date above.
